Developing a practical, real-world guide for NHS commissioners to help drive uptake of a new medicine.

Snapshot
At a glance
We supported a global pharmaceutical company to bridge the gap between medicine approval and real-world NHS adoption, bringing together expert commissioners and clinicians to develop practical implementation guidance.
Client
A leading global pharmaceutical company with a newly licensed therapy.
Challenge
Despite a positive NICE recommendation, the client needed to support NHS commissioners to understand how to prioritise eligible patient populations, design equitable referral pathways, and support deployment within constrained local budgets.
Support
Newmarket Strategy designed and facilitated an advisory board convening NHS commissioners, clinicians and population health leads, synthesising the outputs into a real-world implementation guide tailored to ICB commissioning priorities.
Outcome
The advisory board generated actionable, commissioner-ready guidance that equipped NHS decision-makers with a practical framework for equitable and clinically appropriate deployment of the therapy across their local populations.
The challenge
Turning a NICE Approval into NHS Action
A positive NICE recommendation does not automatically translate into uptake. Our client needed to equip NHS commissioners with the confidence, clinical context, and practical tools to begin commissioning a novel therapy, at a time when ICBs were managing significant financial pressure and competing prioritisation demands.
Our approach
Expert-Led, Commissioner-Focused
We designed and delivered an advisory board process, bringing together NHS commissioners, clinician's, and primary care leads to understand the real-world questions and barriers facing local systems. The insights generated were synthesised into a practical implementation guide grounded in how the NHS actually makes commissioning decisions.
Designed and facilitated a national advisory board with commissioners and clinical specialists Developed a discussion guide to surface local barriers to uptake Produced a commissioner-focused implementation guide aligned to ICB decision-making processes Ensured outputs reflected NHS financial and operational realities
The outcome
Practical Guidance That Commissioners Could Act On
The programme delivered a clear, accessible implementation guide that gave NHS commissioners the framing and tools to move from awareness to action, supporting earlier and more equitable patient access to a therapy with significant benefit.
